Stranger Danger Teaching Abduction Safety to Children

Stranger Danger Teaching Abduction Safety to Children

Stranger Danger is one of the most important lessons for children to learn. We all know the catch phases like “Dont talk to strangers”, “Never get into a car with a stranger”, and “Dont take candy from a stranger.” The phases are simple reminders for kids, but they can make the child insecure and fearful. How can we teach about stranger danger without scaring them or give them nightmares? Heres some quick tips to keeping your child safe.

What is a Stranger?
The first thing to teach children is the difference between a friend and a stranger. Statistics show that casual acquaintances perpetuate most abductions. Children wrongly assume that because the parent says “hi” to the clerk at the grocery store, that they are friends. Quiz your child in the difference between a stranger and a friend. Ask them if a teacher is a friend or stranger, how about the cashier at Blockbuster, or your neighbor that you have know for 5 years, etc.? This drill is an excellent start.

Saying No to Adults
We teach our children to respect adult and listen to them so most children have difficulty say no to adults. Child Predators exploit this tendency to abduct children by telling them to get into a car with a stern voice. The stern voice makes the child feel they did something wrong and comply with the demands.

Teaching your child, that it is okay to say no to strangers and that they ALWAYS need to ask parents permission first before meeting strangers demands. Parents can role-play the parts of the stranger and have child say no.

Whats the Secret Password?
In the case of an emergency, create a family password that only you and your child know. A friend may need to pick up your child at school or an activity. How does your child know that you asked them to pick them up and its not a trick? Yes, you got it, the family password. The child asks the friend for the family password and if they know it, the child knows that you did send them and everythings okay. Dont forget to change the password once it is used.

Important Information your child should know
Teach your child some vital information will assist if they get lost. You should quiz them periodically to ensure they remember it. Give them lots of praise and attention for answering correctly. The vital information for the child to know is your full home address, home phone number, both parents full names, and cell phone numbers. Many kids are shy around other adults so its important to build their confidence so they can repeat the information to a police officer or another person trying to help.

Know thy enemy
Awareness is power in abduction safety. Parents should know if any child predators live in their area. Parents can go to to search for child predators with prior conviction in your area.

Dating Customs Around The World

Dating Customs Around The World

When most Americans think of dating, they think of dinner and a movie. However, dating has changed drastically over the course of history and varies from country to country as well.

In the early ages, there was no dating or courtship. Men actually captured their wives! They would raid villages and take the women they wanted for their own. A lot of our dating traditions were born in the medieval times from the concept of chivalry. This is where we got out notion that the male should pay for dinner and that a male should hold the door open for a lady. Women were actually given the right to propose marriage in 1228!

Between 1830 and 1900, romantic love was considered important to relationships. The rules for dating were strict and steadfast. Men and women had cards with their names imprinted on them which were left for each other in an elaborate courtship ritual. It was commonplace for chaperones to accompany couples on dates.

Today things have changed, but still there are special customs depending on where you live.

In Australia, girls often ask boys out on dates and pay for everything.

In European countries, teenagers often go out on group dates.

Dating is actually forbidden in Iran. Boys and girls are kept separate until they are ready to be married and then their parents do the introductions.

Dating is also very rare in Afghanistan, as most marriages are arranged.

Japanese and Korean individuals usually do not begin dating until they are in college.

In Brazil, group dates are not common at all. People tend to date much longer before they get married.

In China, dating usually does not begin until an individual is in their twenties. Chinese singles usually only date one or two people before they get married. There are also still instances of arranged marriages.

In most Asian countries it is customary for young people to remain at home until they are married and often a newlywed couple will live with one set of parents for awhile after they are married.

In Kiev, women do not like to shake hands. They think that it is not feminine. A woman will hold onto a man’s arm when they are out on a date instead of holding his hand.

Relationships and marriage are important in all cultures, but the actual act of dating varies greatly depending on where you live.

Why Even Gifted Medical Students Need to Take USMLE Review Seriously

Why Even Gifted Medical Students Need to Take USMLE Review Seriously

Medical students who are intellectually gifted and talented often perform individual tasks at a very high level. These students display exceptional memories and learn at a rapid pace. They are knowledgeable about things which their colleagues may not have even heard of yet. But in the USMLE world, a gifted student may also exhibit extreme anxiety more than the average medical student. Here are some truths about giftedness which will further explain why no medical student should deny themselves the opportunity to participate in an adequate USMLE review:

1. Gifted students are often perfectionists and idealistic. They may equate achievement and grades with self-esteem and self-worth, which sometimes leads to fear of failure and interferes with achievement.

2. Medical students who are gifted may experience heightened sensitivity to their own expectations and those of others resulting in guilt over achievements or grades perceived to be low.

3. Most of the gifted students are asynchronous. Their chronological age, social, physical, emotional and intellectual development may be at different levels.

4. Some gifted students are “mappers” or sequential learners while others are “leapers” or spatial learners. Leapers may not know how they got a right answer. Mappers may get lost in the steps leading to the right answer.

5. Gifted students may be so far ahead of their colleagues or classmates that they know more than half of the lesson before the school year begins. Their boredom can result in low achievement and grades.

6. Gifted people are problem solvers. They benefit from working on open-ended, interdisciplinary problems.

7. Gifted individuals often think abstractly and with such complexity that they may need help with concrete study and test-taking skills. In the USMLE world, they may not be able to select one answer in a multiple choice question because they see how all the answers might be correct.

8. Gifted individuals who do well in school may define success in getting an “A” and failure as any grade other than “A.” Thus, in their USMLE review sessions or a practice test any result that is not a “perfect” result and does not make them feel they are at the top of their class, may make them feel frustrated.

Thus medical students who are gifted and talented need opportunities to work hard on challenging learning tasks. Participating with fellow students in a rigorous USMLE review is an opportunity for talented student both to learn and to be understood by their colleagues. In fact the most gifted students may benefit from such reviews as much as, if not more, than the “average” or “below-average” student.

Do Pitbulls Get Along With Kids

Do Pitbulls Get Along With Kids

I often get asked if pitbulls are good with kids, and the answer in short is yes.

But just like with any breed of dogs there are some basic rules you need to follow. Here are 5 basic things to consider about your dog and kids.

1) Always supervise interaction between pit bulls and kids

NEVER leave a child alone with a dog. This goes for any dog. Even if it’s a puppy. This is for both the child’s and the dogs safety.

If you read through articles of pit bull attacks online where children were hurt, maimed or worse, killed by a Pit Bull you will notice that in 99% of the cases they were left alone with the dog or dogs involved.

This should be a rule rather than a tip. Use common sense and care. Small children especially should never be unsupervised around dogs.

2) Watch the child’s behaviour

Watch the children’s behaviour. This tip is more for the dogs safety than the child’s. Children can be brutal and even in the face of such harsh treatment, well bred, responsibly owned Pit Bulls are not prone to biting or “attacking” in defense.

Make sure every child that plays with your dog understands how to behave around them. They should know to respect your dog and it’s space and other things like toys, food, water, or their special bed.

3) Make sure all your dogs prized items are put away

Ah, nothing like a kid running around with a dried bully stick in their hands. lol. Not only is this nasty, your dog will want their bully stick back and attempt to get it. And in the process they could nip a finger or two.

Put all your dogs favorite toys and treats away and where children can’t get a hold of them to be on the safe side.

To clarify, it wouldn’t’ be out of malice or viciousness the dog would get a finger or two. It would be by accident, an accident that can easily be avoided by putting such things away.

4) Start taking Obedience classes

If you’re not already training your dog in basic obedience. Start as soon as possible.

Having an obedient Pit Bull will help when kids are around. Not to mention adults as well.

Teaching your dog to sit so they can be pet, laying down when things get a bit to rowdy, or to do a silly trick to lighten the tension of an over cautious parent is always a great idea.

5) Never Force your dog into a situation that makes them uncomfortable

Some dogs simply get weird around certain people. Don’t force the issue and make your dog say “hello” or play with someone they are showing signs of apprehension around.

Honestly, there is no reason to think that the pitbull is more dangerous with kids than any other dog. There’s no problem with pitbulls and kids.

Public School Insurance for Indiana and Student Injuries

Public School Insurance for Indiana and Student Injuries

It is commonly accepted that school liability has increased over the past several years, and public schools, with their various exposures involving faculty, students, workers and outsiders, must contend with several concerns from multiple scenarios. The list is long; wrongful death, serious injury, sexual harassment, and bullying all present opportunities for large settlements or jury verdicts against these institutions.

However, an analysis of recent decisions in negligence cases brought against schools indicates that the frequency of lawsuits generally has not changed over the past two decades. That said, with so many risks being evident, public school insurance in Indiana should not be overlooked when considering the many coverage’s required on a daily basis.

Most settlements in favor of schools

Fortunately, the majority of outcomes have been decided conclusively in favor of the schools. More than 53 million children in the U.S. spend almost one fourth of their waking hours in school or on school property, therefore the potential scope of school liability is broad. Public perception tends to, however, distort both the extent of school liability and the nature of injuries that children sustain while at school (or when engaged in school-based activities).

While the vast majority of injuries to children at schools are accidental, the desire for many students to be awarded some type of compensation, especially when the injuries are severe, is not uncommon. Public attention to student injuries often focuses on school violence because the media often reports so many incidents of this nature.

However, studies indicate that school-aged children are nine times more likely to sustain an unintentional injury than to be the victim of an intentional injury while at school. Children under the age of fifteen sustain more than 14 million unintentional injuries each year. In all, one in fourteen students suffers a medically attended or temporarily disabling injury while at school.

Failure to exercise a reasonable standard of care

School employees are often targeted in lawsuits. If, for example, an employee of the school fails to take reasonable steps to protect a student from injury, that employee can be found negligent. In negligence cases, courts will weigh the actions of a teacher or an administrator against how a reasonable person would have acted in a similar situation. Failure to exercise a reasonable standard of care must be proven in a negligence case.

Schools provide a wonderful service to parents and students, but the concern over injuries to students can sometimes outweigh the positive aspects of higher learning. Public school insurance in Indiana is necessary to protect the interests of these valued institutions.

Parisian Parents Seek Solace In The Teddy Bear Trust

Parisian Parents Seek Solace In The Teddy Bear Trust

Parisian parents welcome the Teddy Bear Trust for addressing childrens anxieties when being admitted to the hospital.

The Teddy Bear Trust will seek to be able to hand out a free teddy bear to every child whos admitted to a hospital in Paris. The teddy bear will bring comfort to the child, while doctors and nurses can also use the teddy bear as a proxy when explaining the illness and medical procedures to the child. Also, the teddy bear can act as a substitute parent or comrade when the parents arent able to be at the hospital, or when it is occasionally too hard to be there to comfort a perhaps seriously ill child.

Psychologists have applauded mr. Bjorn Stiedl, Danish repeat entrepreneur and businessman, for having come up with the Teddy Bear Trust (Foundation Ours en Peluche). After the idea was first aired a couple of months ago, Parisian parents have heard rumours of the Teddy Bear Trust, and are beginning to ask healthcare workers if they know anything about it, and if there is a teddy bear for their child.

Mr. Stiedl comments that, this clearly shows the need for a project such as this. For a child, being hospitalized is not only about getting well but about getting through the entire experience unscathed. And trust me, a one-month hospitalization for a five-year-old is virtually a life-long experience. Having a teddy bear to share the experience with may very well be more efficient than God knows how many pain-killers, Mr. Stiedl concludes.

Patrick, father to a 4-year-old daughter who has been in the hospital for three weeks suffering from Meningitis, was thrilled about the idea: Thank God my daughter is getting better, but having had a teddy bear comrade in the past three weeks would have been ideal. She has been going in and out of consciousness, and it wasnt always that her mother or I could be here. We have three other kids and live in the suburbs outside Paris, and its not really advisable to travel between Paris and home after nightfall. And if she was awake at night, there was no-one to look after her. With the Teddy Bear Trust, there could have been, Patrick finishes.

The Teddy Bear Trust expects to be able to hand out the first teddy bears before summer.

Teacher Grant Program Now Accepting Applications

Teacher Grant Program Now Accepting Applications

The Pet Care Trust’s Pets in the Classroom program is now accepting grant applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade teachers in both private and public schools who desire to introduce a pet into the classroom or already have a pet in the classroom are welcome to apply.

Many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals, which is why the Pet Care Trust believes in supporting teachers with this educational grants program. Through the Pets in the Classroom program, teachers can obtain a grant for the purchase of new pets, pet environments or pet food and supplies for existing classroom pets. Teachers can apply for a direct, no-hassle grant through the Pets in the Classroom website (www.petsintheclassroom.org). The program offers 7 different types of grants, giving each teacher the opportunity to choose which grant is right for him or her. Grant options include:

Rebate Grant in the amounts of $100 (for small animal or birds) or $150 (for reptiles or fish) for purchases at any pet store;
Sustaining Grant in the amount of $50 to maintain an existing classroom pet;
Petco Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petco;
Petsmart Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petsmart; and
Pet Supermarket Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and pet supplies purchased at Pet Supermarket.

New for 2013-14:

Pet Supplies Plus Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and supplies purchased at Pet Supplies Plus Stores, and
Petland Discounts Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and supplies purchased at Petland Discounts Stores.

The grant program began in 2010 and has awarded 22,793 grants to teachers through the 2012-2013 school year. With a goal of introducing 5 million children in 100,000 classrooms to pets and the benefits they provide, the Trust hopes that the 2013-2014 school year will see a large number of grant applicants.

Steven T. King, Executive Director of the Pet Care Trust, commented, “The newly redesigned Pets in the Classroom website makes it easier than ever for teachers to apply for a grant and to find the resources they may need to select the right pet for their classroom.”

The Pets in the Classroom grant program benefits students by teaching them responsible, long-term pet care at an early age and providing the psychological and developmental benefits associated with the human-animal bond. Studies have shown that caring for pets has a positive effect on children, improving school attendance and teaching children responsibility, as well as encouraging nurturing and building self esteem.
